Most of the Covid restrictions in Scotland will be lifted on Monday 9 August as we move beyond current level 0 rules.
The restrictions on physical distancing and limits to the size of social gatherings will be removed, and all venues (including nightclubs) will be allowed to reopen.
First Minister Nicola Sturgeon commented: “This change is significant and it is hard-earned. The sacrifices everyone has made over the past year and a half can never be overstated. However, while this move will restore a substantial degree of normality, it is important to be clear that it does not signal the end of the pandemic or a return to life exactly as we knew it before Covid struck.”
Whilst the reopening is great news, some restrictions will remain and will significantly impact the events industry:
- Large-scale events will be able to resume but organisers of outdoor events for more than 5,000 people and indoor events for more than 2,000 will have to apply to local authorities for permission.
- Indoor venues will still have to collect the contact details of customers to help with Test and Protect.
- People will still have to wear face coverings in venues and other indoor settings (such as shops and public transport)
However, steps forward that will positively impact the industry and our social lives include:
- Close contacts of those who test positive for Covid will no longer have to automatically self-isolate – as long as two weeks have passed since they received their second dose of the vaccine and they have no symptoms. Instead, they must take a PCR test as soon as possible and can end self-isolation if this comes back negative.
- Restrictions for fully-vaccinated visitors from the EU and US were eased earlier this week. Those arriving from countries on the amber list – except France – no longer have to quarantine if they have been double-jabbed.
- a “gradual approach” to returning to offices should continue, and employers are being encouraged to consider a hybrid model of home and office working in the longer term.
