Opera has brought people together for centuries, like InterContinental Edinburgh The George, creating experiences and stories that go beyond the ordinary and awaken the senses.

Filmed behind the scenes as the hotel prepares to reopen, King’s Hall showcased an exclusive performance Brindisi from La Traviata by Verdi sung by emerging artists: Edinburgh-born soprano Catriona Hewitson and Chinese tenor Shengzhi Ren, as part of Scottish Opera: On Screen programme.

InterContinental Edinburgh The George has enjoyed a multi-million-pound refurbishment since its re-launch back in 2019.  Steeped in rich history, the Hotel is a cultural collection of Georgian townhouses that were originally built in the 1780s, serving as an artist’s studio and entertaining the writers, poets and thinkers of the Enlightenment.

Commenting on the collaboration, Kieran Quinn, the Hotel’s general manager said:

“Scotland’s performing arts sector, like the hospitality industry, has experienced real challenges during the lockdown so we are delighted to support with a partnership that spans both culture, tourism and hospitality, delivering authentic experiences for our guests and opera lovers alike.  The Opera and our Hotel are global brands with a strong local influence, that’s personal and intimate at the same time. Both touch people’s hearts, are grand, full of heritage and history.

“This beautiful performance of Brindisi from La Traviata symbolises the re-awakening of our iconic George Street property and the beginning of a longer-term collaboration with Scottish Opera.  We wanted to bring back joy with this performance and look forward to the future with a sense of celebration and hope as restrictions ease.”

Alex Reedijk, general director of Scottish Opera added:

“While our films have provided opportunities for our sector to work, we have badly missed being able to bring opera to our theatres: hearing people laugh, cry, and be surprised and delighted by the joy of live performance. We look forward to being able to sing for local and visiting audiences again very soon. It was our pleasure to work with, and support, InterContinental Edinburgh The George as both the hospitality and culture sectors are urgently reignited in a safe and sensible manner.”
