A note from Emma Sibbett (EICC), committee member of EdINburgh Unlocked

With longer days, the buds emerging and a promising vaccine programme in full swing, spring is in the air and we all feeling cautiously optimistic about the light at the end of the tunnel.  One year on, our restaurants, bars, hotels rooms, event spaces and offices are still as eerily quiet as they were at the beginning of this pandemic. It has been a year of adapting to new ways of working, prolonged furlough and too many redundancies. Event, hospitality and tourism professionals are dealing with different challenges but we all still experiencing disconnect on some level. We haven’t seen each other in person in our offices, behind our bars, at the kitchen pass, at networking events in far too long.

A group of industry professionals have teamed together to bring the Edinburgh events community a fun, positive, optimistic event on 1 April called EdINburgh Unlocked.

Hosted by Larah Bross, comedienne and owner of Bross Bagels, the event will feature panel speakers from across hospitality, events, tourism and travel, discussing the ups and downs from the last year and what’s in store as our industries move into the future. It will also include an all important recruiter room to help those out of work and in need of a helping hand get back into the working world.

Keeping the overall theme of the event light there will be local talent including magician Elliot Bibby, musicians Bleeker and Yoga with Kaz. On the drinks front, a whisky tasting with the Scotch Malt Whisky Society and a musical wine tasting with Toby Sigouin.

With the fantastic support of YOURgb and the technical support from Cameron Events, not to mention the many others who have provided support along the way, connections and friendships have been made throughout the creation of Edinburgh Unlocked.

“Having been on prolonged furlough myself, having this focus has really helped me to feel connected to the industry that I love, but have not felt a part of in a really long time. Whilst situations may differ slightly across the board, many others must also be feeling this way.

I’m really proud of have been part of this event. It is a terrific example of collaborative working across the city, an event by the people for the people to spread a smile in difficult times. In the spirit of giving back, funds raised will be split between SAMH, Hospitality Health and Empty Kitchens Full Hearts who are doing great work for mental health and providing invaluable support during the pandemic. We really hope you’ll join us!”
