Byres Road and Lanes to join communities across the world to celebrate Make Music Day on 21 June

Thousands of free in person and online events will take place up and down the country on 21 June to mark this year’s Make Music Day – the world’s largest, annual celebration of music. For the second year running, Visit West End have enlisted some of the best music venues in the West End to put on some free to attend performances throughout the day.

Make Music Day is the UK’s largest single-day music festival, encouraging musicians, producers, promoters and music lovers to collaborate and organise in person and online performances in and for their communities. Since beginning as Fête de la Musique in France in 1982, Make Music Day has grown into a global phenomenon that takes place annually in 125 countries, always on 21 June. Solo performers, groups and music creators of all types are invited to take part, regardless of age, ability or musical genre.

To kick off the festival singer-songwriter Dawn Coulshed will be performing between 1pm – 3pm at The Alchemy Experiment on Byres Road – one to watch if you are a fan of early Maggie Rogers and Joni Mitchell.

Also on Byres Road, The Record Factory will be hosting an evening of entertainment from 7pm with acoustic duo Old Bohemia headlining supported by The Fear and Callow Cal.

Ashton Lane will be a haven for music lovers with performances in Brel, The Grosvenor Cafe and Jinty McGuinty’s.

Singer-songwriter Gordon Airlie will be bringing his fantastic vocals to Brel from 7pm-9pm which gives you enough time to wander down the cobbles to Jinty McGuinty’s to catch Chris Suckle’s set from 9:30pm ’till late.

Sets in the Grosvenor Cafe and Oran Mor are yet to be announced as well as street buskers, so keep an eye on visitwestend.com for updates.

John Turner, Chair of Byres Road and the Lanes Business Improvement District the organisation behind Visit West End, said: “We are delighted to be bringing Make Music Day back to the West End, and are very excited to see so many businesses hosting events this year, making this a truly community event. Let’s play on and fill the West End with joyous music!”
