Newcastle has unveiled detailed plans for a new £250m convention and exhibition centre with a 12,500-seat arena.

The stunning development, named Gateshead Quays, will sit between the iconic Sage Gateshead and BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art and is anticipated to boost the regional economy by over £29.5 million and attract over 290,000 visitors to the region a year.

According to a statement issued by Gateshead Council, the authority is working closely with NewcastleGateshead Convention Bureau on a proposal to develop a ‘four–hectare site located on the Gateshead waterfront, which will also incorporate a state-of-the art, 12,500-seat entertainment arena, hotels and restaurants’.

The plans will be a major boost to the economy of the North East of England as it seeks to become a major destination for business and entertainment events.

Paul Szomoru, Director of Business Events at NewcastleGateshead Convention Bureau, said: “Gateshead Quays will feature 6,300m2 of exhibition space and 2,800m2 of meeting space – a huge addition to our already outstanding conference and events offering and when you factor in its iconic location on the banks of the River Tyne, this is going to be a brilliant addition to the UK’s ability to host world-leading international business events, rivalling inspiring event locations around the world.”

Gateshead Council is working in partnership with award-winning property developer Ask Real Estate and leading development manager PATRIZIA UK on the project.
