A host of Scottish events and suppliers have been nominated for this year’s pre-eminent awards ceremony for the outdoor events industry.

The shortlist for the annual NOEA (National Outdoor Events Association) awards was unveiled yesterday with numerous Scottish entries.

The Eilean Dorcha festival on the remote Outer Hebridean island of Benbecula has been nominated for the Small Event of the Year, whilst the Tiree Music Festival – on the Inner Hebridean island of Tiree – was nominated for the Small Festival of the Year.

Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen has been nominated for Student Event of the Year and Ambulance Scotland for Medical Provider of the Year.

And the NOEA Scotland Tribute Award this year features four nominees:

  • Beltane Fire Festival for the Fire Festival
  • Rural Projects for Gardening Scotland
  • PDF Productions for Party at the Palace
  • Falkirk Community Trust for Fire & Light

The 14th annual Convention and Awards Dinner will be held in the Roman Baths and Pump Rooms in Bath on November 22 following the largest volume of entries in the award’s history.

Susan Tanner, NOEA’s Chief Executive, commented: “This year saw a 50% increase in nominations across all categories for the awards which was unprecedented. Consequently our judges had a hard job to decide on the three or four shortlisted in each category today.”

Alistair Turner, Head Judge and Managing Director of EIGHT PR & Marketing, said: “The quality of entry has once again improved from previous years, and some amazing events have applied. The strength of entries was excellent and seeing some events come back with even more success shows their commitment to the awards. It is a huge achievement for those shortlisted today and we look forward to seeing who are named as winners in November.”

Joining Alistair on the judging panel were Andy McNicholl, City Events Manager for Liverpool Council; Gill Tee who is founder and Managing Director of entertee and Director of entertee Hire; and Marino Fresch, Head of Marketing UK and Ireland for Eventbrite.

NOEA is the UK’s leading outdoor events trade association and last year announced ‘commercialisation’ as one of the key themes for the association to tackle through its membership, and on behalf of the wider UK outdoor events industry.

Last year’s convention told emotional stories of event organisers’ anguish when creating new events, as well as insightful ideas on balancing profit, risk, income and spend. The Commercialisation Project returns for 2017 with its ‘Part Two’ theme; ‘Create. Collaborate. Control’.
